Chittorgarh left across the pages of history presents rather a different portrait of Rajasthan and its Rajputs. Prolonged attacks and sieges did nothing to dampen the spirit of these people who would rather die than give up their honour or in other words accept defeat. And this is where women commit jauhar.

The Chittor Hill Fort remains as a mark of these historic moments. A camel ride ascending the hill along the tortuous routes towards the fort is just the right way to enrich yourself with this remarkable history lesson with stupendous views around. A series of pristine water bodies, superbe forts and havelis, and innumerable temples add the final touch. And it is dinner time back in the train.
Day 4 - Saturday - Udaipur

Udaipur has an intriguing history. Constant unrest and sieges propelled the Rajputs to move their capital from Mewar to Udaipur. It is said that with its tranquil lakes flowing through, the king immediately visualized it as a soaring capital of his empire. The first visit is of course to the City Palace positioned atop a jagged promontory dotted with charming mahals and turrets, all built in the 16th century.

Chug along the tranquil waters of Udaipur lakes around the Lake palace, which now serves as a deluxe hotel. Have lunch there and enjoy a spot of shopping for traditional Rajasthani paintings before departing to the next town, Jaiselmer.

The havelis left behind by the wealthy Jain merchants adorn this quintessential region and lots of frescoes speak aloud of the glorious trading days. And the Golden Fort crowns every other highlight here and is the only inhabited middle age fortress on planet.
